Mariya Vasilyeva (B. 1993, Kyiv) is a German-Ukrainian video and performance artist working between Austria and Germany.
With a background in fine arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the University for Applied Arts in Vienna, Vasilyeva has developed an artistic practice that centers around performances and video collages. In these works, Vasilyeva portrays herself in various roles and scenarios, exploring themes such as power dynamics, representation in private and public life, and body politics.
Vasilyeva’s experiences as a Ukrainian immigrant in Western Europe have greatly influenced her art, leading her to question patterns of identity, particularly as a woman. Through her art, Vasilyeva examines how factors such as sexuality, religion, ethical norms, and archetypes shape and influence the female experience.
Mariya Vasilyeva’s works have recently been shown at Krinzinger Projects, Parallel Vienna, Kunstverein Fürstenfeldbruck, Kunstraum Klingental, Basel, and Kunstmuseum, St. Gallen.
